Arizona State Bar Exam | Basic Information

The Arizona Bar Association was formed in 1881 and now has over 24,000 members. It is a voluntary association open to all licensed attorneys and current law students.

Arizona is one of 40+ jurisdictions that have adopted the Uniform Bar Examination (UBE). Arizona first administered the UBE in July 2012.

Arizona Bar Exam Format

What’s the format of the UBE?

The UBE is administered twice each year in Arizona (in February and July). The examination is administered over two days in four, three-hour sessions. The UBE has three parts: the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), the Multistate Essay Exam (MEE), and the Multistate Performance Test (MPT).

MBE

The MBE is a six-hour test and consists of 200 multiple-choice questions that test your understanding across seven subjects. Your MBE score comprises 50% of your overall UBE score.

MEE

The MEE consists of six 30-minute legal essays. The MEE makes up 30% of your score.

Essay topics may include the following: Business Associations, Civil Procedure, Conflict of Laws, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence, Family Law, Property, Secured Transactions, Torts, Trusts, Unincorporated Business Entities, Wills and Estates, etc.

MPT

What’s the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination?

The Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) tests your understanding of established standards of conduct for lawyers. The MPRE is administered three times each year (in March, August, and November). The test consists of 60 multiple-choice questions and is two hours long. Check out this MPRE Tips video!

Arizona Bar Exam Scores and Grading

A passing score for the UBE in Arizona is 273/400. Scores of the three tests comprising the UBE are weighted as follows:

  • MBE = 50% of your total UBE score
  • MEE = 30%
  • MPT = 20%

*A passing score for the MPRE in Arizona is 85/150.

When are my Arizona Bar Exam results released?

Arizona Bar Exam results are usually posted six to nine weeks after the exam date. February bar exam results are normally posted in April. July bar exam results are normally posted in October.

Can I see my Arizona Bar Exam score?

If you passed the Arizona Bar Exam, you won’t be able to see your score. If you failed the exam, you can send a letter to the Arizona Bar Admissions Office and ask for your written responses, which they will mail to you.

Can I appeal to have my Arizona Bar Exam re-graded?

You may file a petition within 20 days to have your exam reviewed, but without an extraordinary circumstance, it is unlikely that your exam will be regraded.

How many times can I take the Arizona Bar Exam?

You can retake the UBE three times in Arizona, but you can request permission to take it more times if necessary.

Applicants seeking admission to the Arizona State Bar, without taking the bar exam, must comply with Reciprocity Requirements.

The following states have reciprocity with Arizona: Alaska, Colorado, District of Columbia, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

In order to be eligible for admittance to the Arizona State Bar, without taking the bar examination, you must:

  • Have a JD from an ABA accredited law school
  • Actively practice law for at least three of the last five years
  • Have moral fitness
  • Earn at least an 85 on the MPRE during your lifetime
