Louisiana State Bar Exam | Basic Information
The Louisiana Bar Association was started in 1929. Membership is mandatory for lawyers practicing in the state of Louisiana.
Louisiana is not a Uniform Bar Exam (UBE) state. Louisiana has its own bar exam with essay questions and some multiple choice questions. Louisiana requires the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE).

What’s the format of the Louisiana Bar?
The Louisiana Bar is administered twice a year in Louisiana (in February and July). The examination is administered over three days, seven hours per day. The Louisiana bar has essay questions and some multiple choice question covering nine different topics.

What’s the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination?
The Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) tests your understanding of established standards of conduct for lawyers. The MPRE is administered three times each year (in March, August, and November). The test consists of 60 multiple-choice questions and is two hours long. Check out this MPRE Tips video!

Are you interested in taking the Louisiana Bar Exam? Here’s some basic information on applying to take the Louisiana Bar Exam.
The Louisiana Bar exam fee is $875 for most takers. Law students pay a $125 law student registration fee, and later a $750 bar exam fee. There is a late fee of $750.

If you desire to take the bar exam in February, the application opens on September 1 and you should submit your application by November 1. If you desire to take the bar exam in July, the application opens on December 1 and you should submit your application by February 1. If you do not file by these deadlines, you will pay a $750 late fee.
In addition to passing the Louisiana bar exam with a score of at least 650 out of 900, there are several requirements that must be met in order to be admitted as an attorney in Louisiana, including:
- Score 80 or higher on the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) within the accepted time frame.
- Certificate from Committee of Character and Fitness
- Pass background check and be fingerprinted
- Complete Dean’s Certification form

Louisiana Bar Exam results are usually posted six to nine weeks after the exam date.
Can I see my Louisiana Bar Exam score?
If you passed the Louisiana Bar Exam, you won’t be able to see your score. If you failed the exam, you will be notified of your score on each section.
Can I appeal to have my Louisiana Bar Exam re-graded?
No. Essays are automatically re-graded if you are close to passing.
How many times can I take the Bar Exam in Louisiana?
You can take the Louisiana Bar Exam without limit.
