Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, D.C., Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
- The NCBE is rolling out the NextGen UBE—its updated bar exam—in phases. The NextGen UBE is also a uniform, portable exam, and UBE-based preparation materials remain highly relevant if you are sitting in one of these jurisdictions. The adoption schedule, per the NCBE as of April 2026, is:
- July 2026: Connecticut, Guam, Idaho, Maryland, Missouri, Northern Mariana Islands, Oregon, Palau, Virgin Islands, and Washington.
- July 2027: Arizona, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
- February 2028: Delaware, D.C., and Illinois.
- July 2028: Alabama, Alaska, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
- Arkansas and Montana have not yet announced adoption plans.
- Several jurisdictions (listed below) test all parts of the UBE—the MBE, MEE, and MPT—on their bar exam, but are not considered UBE jurisdictions because part of their bar exam is jurisdiction specific. If you plan on taking the bar exam in one of these jurisdictions, we recommend you get one of our UBE packages. You then will only need to get some material to help you prepare for the jurisdiction-specific part of your bar exam (since we don’t offer jurisdiction-specific material at this time).
- Here are those jurisdictions: Mississippi and Wisconsin. (Note: Hawaii, South Dakota, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and Palau have moved off this list as they are now scheduled to adopt the NextGen UBE.)
- If your jurisdiction isn’t on either list, odds are that you’ll still be interested in our MBE Suite. As of July 2026, the MBE is no longer mostly universal: ten jurisdictions — Connecticut, Guam, Idaho, Maryland, Missouri, Northern Mariana Islands, Oregon, Palau, Virgin Islands, and Washington — have switched to the NextGen UBE and no longer administer it. Of the remaining jurisdictions, all administer the MBE except Louisiana and Puerto Rico. More jurisdictions will drop the MBE as they transition to the NextGen UBE in 2027 and 2028, and the MBE — along with the MEE and MPT — is expected to be phased out entirely alongside the legacy UBE, though the final sunset timeline is still subject to change.
- If your jurisdiction has already moved to the NextGen UBE, or if you’re planning on practicing in Louisiana or Puerto Rico, you may still be interested in purchasing individual audio and written outlines for the subjects that you struggle with to supplement a course more catered to your jurisdiction’s exam.
